A)      Scientific wisdom behind Prohibition of Pork / Ham / Hog / Swine / Pig / Sow 

Doctors commonly say “Man is what he eats.” which truly reflects the mental, physical and spiritual state of human beings. Similarly there is an English saying that "a man becomes what he eats." According to physicians and medical experts, pork is a harmful diet. Consumption of swine-flesh creates lowliness in character and destroys moral and spiritual faculties in a man. Therefore It may not be wrong if a pork eater is called swine. He shouldn’t mind due to the reason it’s just a medical terminology. Isn’t it? Don’t mind anyway.

Consumption of pork causes several diseases

Non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Pig  carries no less than 450 contagious diseases out of which many are transmitted to humans by eating pork and its by-products, by raising pigs, by handling their by-products and waste and most serious of them include Anthrax, foot and mouth disease, Septicaemia, Japanese fever and so on detailed below in the article.

                1.                    Dr. Glen Shepherd wrote the following on the dangers of eating pork in Washington Post (31 May 1952). "One in six people in USA and Canada have germs in their muscles - trichinosis 8 from eating pork infected with trichina worms. Many people who are infected shows no symptoms. Most of those, who do have, recover slowly. Some die; some are reduced to permanent invalids. All were careless pork caters". He continued "No one is immune from the disease and there is no cure. Neither antibiotics nor drugs or vaccines affect these tiny deadly worms. Preventing infection is the real answer." After reading the statement of Dr. Shepherd, one can realize that there is no real guarantee of safety when eating pork that one would not be affected by trichina worm. That is why modern doctors advise three prohibitions during illness: no liquor, no pork and no smoking.

            2.             Dr. E. Kazim. M.D. in his article "Medical aspects of forbidden foods in Islam" (July 1981 issue of Muslim Journal has described diseases carried or caused by the flesh of the swine. He writes: The pig is a scavenger. It is an omnivorous animal. It eats everything. There are many diseases carried from swine to man, particularly parasite infestations. Lately extensive research has been focused on senility-old age is characterized by hardening of inner lining of the blood vessels of the heart, brain etc. a process called atheroselerosis. When a clot forms, it results in coronary thrombosis or a heart attack, cerebral thrombosis or stroke. Different dietary factors are responsible for atheroselerosis. Gross atheroma may be produced in rabbit by feeding it with cholesterol, but when you add lard (derived from hog fat/pig fat) to the cholesterol, theincidence of atheroma is increased and thus you would produce coronary thrombosis, and myocardial infraction.

           3.             Besides, lard contains 2800 units of vitamin D per 100 grams and no vitamin A at all. Lately vitamin D has been held responsible for atheroma, by causing increased absorption of calcium in the blood vessels. In human beings, serum cholesterol is not dependent on the intake of cholesterol in the diet, but depends upon the proportion of animal fats in the diet, which elevates the beta-lipo protein level in the blood. Animal fats contain saturated fatty acids and these saturated fatty acids have been found to be as one of the causes of atheroma in man. Medium fat bacon contains 25% proteins and 55% fat. According to medical research, the fat content in pork is more than any other meat (beef, mutton etc.) and it takes longer to digest.

               4.                    A person can have various helminths like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc.    

           5.             One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if itenters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

            6.             Another dangerous helminthes is Trichuris trichiura. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichuris trichiura, twenty-two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature. Trichina worms ingested through pork enter the blood stream through the stomach and intestines and spread throughout the body. Trichina worms particularly settle in muscle tissue in the jaw, tongue, neck, throat and chest regions. They lead to paralysis of the chewing, speech and swallowing muscles. They also cause vein obstructions, meningitis and brain infections. Severe cases may even end in death. The most dangerous aspect of the disease is that there is no cure for it. Trichina outbreaks have been observed from time to time in Sweden, Britain and Poland, despite tight veterinary controls.

             7.             Swine flu is a disease caused by the virus “H1N1” and can be passed from person to person through the air. Like the flu virus in human beings, the swine flu virus constantly changes in pigs. Pigs’ respiratory passages contain receptors that are sensitive to viruses such as swine, human and bird flu. For that reason, pigs increase the possibility of new viruses emerging in the event they are transmitted simultaneously. The A/H1N1 virus, a combination of human, swine and bird flu viruses, only appears in the receptors in pigs’ respiratory passages; in other words, pigs serve as hosts for viruses to combine together in. Because human beings have no natural immunity to the virus and since it spreads very fast, the World Health Organization has warned that the disease is about to spread out of control as an epidemic. One of the most frightening aspects of the disease is that it is the same as the “Spanish Flu” that led to the deaths of more than 50 million people between September 1918 and June 1920. It is the AH1N1 virus that causes the disease in both cases. Spanish flu was also first transmitted to human beings from pigs in America, from where it spread across the world, becoming one of the worst epidemics in history.

            8.             PARASITIC (Bloodsucking) DISEASES

            9.             TRICHINELLA SPIRATIS ( Trichina worms )
It is the most dangerous parasite to man (Rheumatism and muscular pain). The infected persons shown no symptoms recover very slowly some die, some reduced to permanent invalids. No one is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

            10.           TAENIA SOLIUM (Pork tape worm)  
The worm causes malnourishment of the person leading to anemia, diarrhea, extreme depression melancholia and digestive disturbances. Cysticercosis means that larva enter the blood stream then settle down in one or more of the vital organs of the body, for example: brain, liver, lungs or spinal cord. They grow and encapsulate, inducing pressure to the system around, resulting in dangerous diseases (diarrhea, digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation).

           11.           ROUND WORMS
Examples: Ascaris, which may lead to digestive disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice.

           12.           HOOK WORMS
Examples: Ancylostomiasis, which may lead to anemia, oedema, heart failure or retarded growth (mental and physical), tuberculosis, diarrhea and typhoid.

Bleeding, anemia and other syndromes; if ova are settled in the brain or spinal cord, paralysis and death may occur.

           24.           Toxo plasma goundii- It is a very dangerous diseases. A new born baby of an infected woman may die within few days or weeks after delivery. But if he survives he may develop blindness or deafness.In adult chronic exhaustive fever with enlarged liver and spleen may occur. Pneumonia, or celebro- spinal meninggitis which may lead to death or madness. The patient may become blind and deaf too.

           25.           Pork is very fatty and contains poisonous substances - Pork is very fatty. When ingested, the fat enters the blood stream and leads to hardening of the arteries, raised blood pressure and coronary infarct. In addition, pork contains a toxin called “Sutoxin.” The lymph glands have to work extra hard in order to expel these toxins from the body. This manifests as swelling of the lymph glands, especially in children. If the disease progresses, all the lymph glands swell up, temperature rises and pain begins.

             26.           In April 2010 A North Carolina State University study spanned for several years showed that feral pigs in North Carolina have tested positive for Brucella suis, an important and harmful bacteria that can be transmitted to people. Clinical signs of brucellosis, the disease caused by the bacteria, in people are fairly non-specific and include persistent flu-like symptoms.

             27.           Dr. Suzanne Kennedy-Stoskopf, an NC State research professor of wildlife infectious diseases and a co-author of the paper, says that testing positive for antibodies to B. suis means the feral pigs have been exposed to and mounted an immune response against the bacteria. Antibodies do not eliminate B. suis from pigs, so the animals are considered infected and capable of transmitting the bacteria to other pigs and people.

             28.           At one point referred to as "swine mystery disease," "blue abortion," and "swine infertility," the disease was finally named Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), or blue ear disease which causes highly pathogenic strain of blue ear swept through almost all provinces in China.Dr. Jaminet reached conclusion that PRRS virus primarily attacks the pig's immune system, leaving its body open to a host of infections, particularly in the lungs. Initial research revealed that the virus was transmitted via semen, saliva and blood, leaving pigs herded closely together and transported in close quarters by trucks more susceptible to infection. However, according to research presented at the 2007 International PRRS Symposium, the disease is also airborne, making eradication efforts very difficult.

          29.           The Nipah Virus – Discovered in 1999, the Nipah virus has caused disease in both animals and humans, through contact with infected animals. In humans, the virus can lead to deadly encephalitis (an acute inflammation of your brain). I originally reported on this virus in 2000, but according to CDC data, the Nipah virus reemerged again in 2004

             30.           Porcine Endogenous Retrovirus (PERV) – According to a study in the journal Lancet, this virus can spread to people receiving pig organ transplants, and according to test tube studies, PERV strains do have the ability to infect human cells. PERV genes are scattered throughout pigs' genetic material, and researchers have found that pig heart, spleen and kidney cells release various strains of the virus.

            31.           Menangle Virus – In 1998, it was reported that a new virus infecting pigs was able to jump to humans. The menangle virus was discovered in August 1997 when sows at an Australian piggery began giving birth to deformed and mummified piglets.

             32.           The epidemic spread to almost half of China in 2006 and was atypical of previous outbreaks of the disease, the scientists said in a paper published in the June issue of the Public Library of Science. It affected more than 2 million pigs and killed 400,000 of them, they said.

             33.           A similar virus as PRRS has already been detected in neighboring Vietnam and Myanmar, and health experts are trying to determine if it came from China.

           34.           Skin diseases:- Substances known as “histamine” and “imtidazole” in pork cause excessive itching. They also prepare the way for infectious skin diseases such as eczema, dermatitis and neurodermatitis.  These substances also increase the risk of boils, appendicitis, gall bladder diseases and arterial infections. Doctors therefore advise heart patients to avoid eating pork.

           39.           The pig is the carrier of various helminths, such as roundworms, pinworms, hookworms, etc. One of the most dangerous and common is Taenia solium, a type of tapeworm.

            40.           Yersinia enterocolitica – which causes gastroenteritis

            41.           Pork may be the reservoir responsible for sporadic, locally acquired cases of acute hepatitis E (HEV)reported in regions with relatively mild climates. It has been found to transmit between swine and humans.

         42.           Pork contains excessive amounts of growth hormone - Excessive amounts of growth hormone ingested through pork leads to tissue swelling and deformations. It can lead to sudden and extreme fat accumulation. People who eat pork generally have a higher risk of obesity. It may lead to abnormal growth of the nose, jaw, hand and feet bones. The most dangerous aspect of excessive growth hormone is that is prepares the way for cancer.

             43.           Pork contains high levels of sulfur - Since pork contains high levels of sulfur, when it is eaten a large amount of sulfur is absorbed by the body. Excessive amounts may lead to various diseases, such as joint infections when it accumulates in cartilage, muscle and nerves, calcification and hernia. In the event of regular pork consumption, soft connective tissue from the pig replaces the hard cartilage in the body. As a result, the cartilage becomes unable to bear the weight of the body, which in turn leads to joint deficiencies.

              44.           Pork has fat building material Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50 million Americans suffer from hypertension. It is also the cause of commonly found tyres on the belly of the westerners and pork eating countries citizens.

            45.           Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs. Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta. 

          46.           Pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say “you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife”. If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs. We Indians look upon America to be very advanced and sophisticated. Whatever they do, we follow after a few years. According to an article in Island magazine, this practice of swapping wives has become common in the affluent circles of Mumbai after US, western countries and the pig consumer Far east Asian countries, including Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, HongKong, Japan.

            47.           OTHER DISEASES - Pimples, boils, cysts  Flesh of the pork is hard to digest and may lead to chronic digestive disturbances. Pimples, boils, cysts are common in pork eaters. These are some of the parasites and diseases found in pork and/ or the skin of pigs and certainly there are many more. There is still no means of killing these parasites, in the tissues, neither has anyone found a method of expelling them, even produced any specific treatment for the diseases.

          207. Primitive neuroectodermal Tumours (PNET): Pork parasites can cause brain tumours in children, according to the Journal of Paediatric and Perinatal epidemiology. Children raised on pig farms have 12 times the risk of having this problem than other children.
           208. Clostridium Perfringens Type C: According to the new England Journal of Medicine, this potentially deadly disease is spread by eating infected pigs; tragically, the disease is even more deadly if the patient is manourished, such as in poor or war-torn countries.
           

If we read the above study carefully we can reach the conclusion on scientific basis that new viruses unknown to mankind can be generated via pigs which can cause epidemics and can cause mass killings of human beings all around the world in the future as well. Its analogy is like a time bomb the instensity of which is kill all the free line population of the world within a short time and can happen at any time and instant remedy can't be generated.

(On a side Note: Pig industry is a source for today's Cigarette industry. People irrespective of either having faith in God or not, do Smoke Cigarettes these days like Chain Smokers like fire that keeps burning all day and let out smoke through their nostrils and Pig's blood is used in Cigarette filters which means even if a person himself smoking or the persons around him even not smoking but only inhailing the pigs blood. On page 1512, the beginning of Hebrews, an curious note appears, which is mentioned by Bruce M. Metzger in his NTTC book. A later (minuscule aera) scribe complains about a change of the text of Heb 1:3:

"Fool and knave, can't you leave the old reading alone and not alter it!"

Christians have to follow the law i.e. Old Testament as clearly instructed by Jesus in the Bible New Testament if they believe in it.

The Seventh day adventist Christians do not eat pork.

In Judaism (The OT Laws mentioned above) Jews do not eat pork who follow God's law.

In a 3,000 year old Chinese Confucian Book of Rites there is proverb: " A respectable man does not eat the flesh of pigs or dogs."

Buddhists never touch pork.

Zoroastrians never touch pork.

Hinduism also forbids eating pork. High caste Hindus regard it as shameful to eat pork; it is only the low castes and the (so-called) Untouchables who eat pork.

2) Pork is prohibited in the Quran

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well-known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in the Qur’an

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than four different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

“Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah.” [Al Qur’an 5:3]

Muslims follow the divine law which is much higher than the medical advice. 

The Glorious Qur'an says, "So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you, and thank the bounty of your Lord if it is Him you serve. He has forbidden for you only carrion and  blood and swine-flesh and that which has been immolated in the name of any other than Allah; but he who is driven thereto, neither craving nor transgressing, Lo! then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." (16:114-115)

Allah subhanahuwatalaa says in the Quran:
"Say (O Muhammad ): "I find not in that which has been inspired to me anything forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be Maytatah (a dead animal) or blood poured forth (by slaughtering or the like), or the flesh of swine (pork, etc.) for that surely is impure, or impious (unlawful) meat (of an animal) which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allâh (or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., or on which Allâh's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But whosoever is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, (for him) certainly, your Lord is Oft­ Forgiving, Most Merciful."  (Al-An’am 6:145) 

The above is the order from the Creator of the universe and the Supreme Law-Giver. All Muslims are under the obligation to obey it. This is a plain and straightforward answer to those, who usually ask why Muslims abstain from eating pork. Nevertheless, there is no sin, if a Muslims is forced by famine or starvation to eat pork in order to save his life.The above verses of the Glorious Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

3) Hadith (Saying of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Indicate That Pigs Will Be Destroyed in the End Times 

Fourteen hundred years ago, our Prophet (saas) indicated that pigs will be destroyed in the End Times:

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will come as a just judge… he will slay the pig and distribute goods and possessions, but because of their abundance nobody will accept them.  (Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al- Muntadhar, p. 31)

This hadith suggests that there will have to be a mass slaughter of pigs in the time of Hazrat Mahdi (as). Indeed, states may have to resort to the mass slaughter of pigs in order to prevent the spread of swine flu if it becomes an epidemic threatening the whole world. Egypt and other countries did the same exercise of  slaughtering pigs in order to protect itself against the diseases caused by Pigs. The hadith of our Prophet (saas) state that it will be essential to slaughter pigs, the source of swine flu, in the same way the authorities dry up the swamps that constitute the breeding grounds of mosquitoes, which also constantly spread disease. As has already been stated, pigs’ respiratory passages play the main role in the emergence of this dangerous disease. That is just one of the reasons behind Allah’s prohibiting the consumption of pork.

The hadeeth of Jaabir  narrated by al-Bukhaari (2121) and Muslim (1581).  It was narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say on the day of the Conquest when he was in Makkah: “Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, dead meat, pigs and idols.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of the fat taken from a dead animal which is used for caulking ships, greasing animal skins and which people use to light their lamps?” He said, “No, it is haraam.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “May Allah curse the Jews, for Allah forbade them the fat, but they melted it then they sold it and consumed its price.” 

Jesus, son of Maryam, will be a just judge and just priest (in my community), break and crush the cross [annul the worship of the cross] and kill the pig [inform that eating pork is forbidden]... He will fill the world with peace like a bowl of water. There will be unity of religion, and nothing other than Allah will be worshiped.

Jesus will break the cross [annul the worship of the cross], kill the pigs [inform that eating pork is forbidden], and abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts).

C)Impact on individual’s Body & Soul and On Society as a whole

The life of a man is a compound of body and soul. Anything, which is harmful for the body, hurts the soul as well. Consumption of swine-flesh reduces the feeling of shame and as such the standard of modesty. Those nations, which consume pork habitually, have a low standard of morality with the result that virginity, chastity and bashfulness are becoming a thing of the past in Europe today. The number of unwed mothers is on the increase despite of the use of pills and other contraceptives.

According to a report, 60 to 70% of girls in Sweden become mothers before marriage. The formula of "skin to skin is no sin" is taking its toll but there is hardly any feeling of shame or remorse over the end-result. Since the European nations have become addicted to wine and pork, sexual freedom with all its attendant evils has got ingrained in their culture. Consequently, homosexuality has been legalized by the British Parliament.

The Holy Qur'an has prohibited the swine-flesh, hence the Muslims would not dare touch it. The Bible has also forbidden swine-flesh, but Christians disregarded this order and started consuming it. The Europeans now proclaim that pork is a very powerful diet, rich in protein. Some of them further argue that since there is a great scarcity of food-stuff in the world and swines are available in abundant quantity, they should be consumed in the diet to overcome the food shortage. If this argument is true, why don't they use dog's meat as dogs too are available in abundance? The Europeans perhaps hate the mere mention of dog's meat in the same way as the Muslims shun pork.

Another wrong notion about swine-flesh is that its consumption lengthens life-span, although this is a pure myth and absurdity. On the contrary, people, who abstain from pork and liquor, have a longer span of life. The Muslims in Central Asia bear a testimony to this truth.

However, in the consumption of flesh Muslims are required to be selective and to distinguish between Halaal (Lawful) and Haraam (Unlawful). This step leads automatically to the deeper understanding of the need for the cultivation of a pure human nature. As blood is virtually our life-stream and whatever we consume ultimately affects the blood system, it is, therefore, necessary to exercise choice in the selection of our food and drinks as part of  the requirements of the Shariah.

There are certain food and drinks specified by Allah, and His Messenger Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as forbidden. The prohibition of these food and drinks is not by any means an arbitrary action or an unwarranted decree of Allah. It is the first and foremost a divine intervention in the best interest of man and for his own benefit.

The reasons behind the Divine intervention are numerous. They are of a nature intellectual and spiritual, moral and mental, physical and economic. And the sole purpose is to show man how to develop himself according to an upright course of life in order to be a healthy unit in the structure of the family, then of society and eventually of humanity at large.

Reliable medical doctors and social scientists are able to realize how those food and drinks forbidden by Islam are harmful and destructive to the human spirit and morality as well as to the physique and moral fibre of man and to verify the benefits of Islamic legislations on the subjects.

The prohibition is based on the aim of the purification of one's nature, because food, when consumed, doesn't merely enter the stomach and intestines and become excreta. It is absorbed and metabolized into the system and circulated to all parts of the human body, including the brain, and this in no small way affects man's nature.

Take a look at the nature of the pig for example. The pig is naturally lazy and indulgent in sex, it is dirty, greedy and gluttonous. It dislikes sunlight and lacks the spirit and will to "fight." It eats almost anything, be it human excreta or anything foul and unwholesome. Amongst all animal flesh, pork is the favoured cradle of harmful germs. Pork also serves as a carrier of diseases to mankind. It is for this reason that its flesh is not suitable for consumption.

Some people have argued that the "modern pig" reared in farms is given only clean foods, therefore, its flesh should be consumable. The answer is that you may feed the pig on clean, wholesome food, but you can't change its nature. It is still a pig and will always stay so. A pig is not a plant and you cannot change it by bud-grafting.

Playing Dice based games - Pig's blood

It should be noted that that the following is a mistranslation:

“He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.” (Muslim)

The word mentioned in this hadith is Nard which means backgammon; the Arabic word for chess is shatranj. A more authentic translation is: “He who plays with dice will be deemed as a person thrusting his hands in pig’s blood.” (Muslim)

Games that are played with dice are generally ruled to be makrooh because they involve an element of chance. They are regarded as haram if played as a means of gambling, because of this hadith, which was explained in detail in the chapter on gambling:

Today Dice games include Luddo, Monopoly, Samp sirhi, backgammon, Luddo star etc… All these dice games are very addictive by nature.

D)                       Prohibition of Alcohol in the Bible, Quran and scientific wisdom behind prohibition of Alcohol

Question:

Why is the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Islam?

Answer:

Alcohol has been the scourge of human society since time immemorial. It continues to cost countless human lives, and causes terrible misery to millions throughout the world. Alcohol is the root cause of several problems facing society. The statistics of soaring crime rates, increasing instances of mental illnesses and millions of broken homes throughout the world bear mute testimony to the destructive power of alcohol.

1.   Prohibition of alcohol in the Qur’an

The Glorious Qur’an prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verse:

"O ye who believe!
Intoxicants and Gambling,
(Dedication of) stones,
And (divination by) arrows,
Are an Abomination –
Of Satan’s handiwork;
Eschew such (abomination),
That ye may prosper."
                                  [Al-Qur’an 5:90]

The prohibition went through stages. Some say it was so to allow those who got used to drinking to easily give it up. 

Verse in favor : 

(16:67) And of the fruits of the date-palm, and grapes, whence ye derive strong drink and (also) good nourishment. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for people who have sense. 

Verse against it : 

(2:219) Strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is great sin.

Answer: 

At the begining of Islam, drinking alcohol was allowed. The prohibition went through stages. Some say it was so to allow those who got used to drinking to easily give it up. 

Stage One: Educating people that the harm of drinking wine is greater than its benefits."They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: in them is great sin and some profit for people: But the sin is greater than the profit..." (2: 219) 

Stage Two: Encouraging them not to go to prayer intoxicated."Oh you who believe! Approach not prayers in a state of intoxication until you can understand all that you say…” (4: 43) 

Stage Three: After understanding and practising the above, the total and decisive prohibition of wine was declared:“Oh you who believe! Truly intoxicants and gambling and divination by arrows are an abomination, of Satan's doing: avoid it in order that you may be successful.” (5: 90)

2.   Prohibition of alcohol in the Bible

The Bible prohibits the consumption of alcohol in the following verses:

               1.     "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."
                 [Proverbs 20:1]

              2.     "And be not drunk with wine."
                  [Ephesians 5:18]

     3.   "But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest   and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean." [ Isaiah 28: 7 & 8]

      4. Leviticus 10:9 "You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the Tent of Meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.

     5.  Proverbs 23:30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.

    6. Isaiah 5:11 Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine.

    7.   Isaiah 5:22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks,

    8.  Isaiah 19:14 The LORD has poured into them a spirit of dizziness; they make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers around in his vomit.

  9.  Isaiah 28:1 Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley--to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!

  10. Isaiah 56:12 "Come," each one cries, "let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better." Isaiah 57:1 Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come (because of drinking wine).

  11.  Hosea 4:11 to prostitution, to old wine and new, which take away the understanding

  12.  Hosea 7:5 On the day of the festival of our king the princes become inflamed with wine, and he joins hands with the mockers.

   13. Micah 2:11 If a liar and deceiver comes and says, 'I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,' he would be just the prophet for this people!  (NOTE: PAUL ALLOWED PORK AND ALCOHOL - Christians need to think, ponder over this prophesy which is very clear and decisive and it will no longer be difficult to understand that it is the lust of wine by which the satan inspired, liar and deceiver self proclaimed apostle i.e. Paul offered to gentiles (non-jews) which All christians and pagans accepted. But we still see that (as Jesus son of Mary said) many among the today's christians "the evil and adulterous generation" still follow Paul despite many warnings given by Jesus Christ about Paul. The author of the majority of the books of the New Testament, Saint Paul, says:

“For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto His glory; why am I still judged as a sinner?” Romans 3:7

• Christians need to Identify the True Last Prophet of ALLAH (God All mighty) ---- ‘Adiy ibn Hatim, who was a Christian before accepting Islam, once came to God’s Messenger Muhammad (PBUH), upon him be peace and blessings. When he heard him reciting:

The Jews take their scholars (teachers of law), and the Christians take their monks, as well as the Messiah, son of Mary, for Lords beside God, whereas they were commanded to worship none but the One God. There is no deity but He. Glory be to Him, that He is infinitely exalted above that they associate partners with Him (Quran 9:31),

he said, “O Messenger of God, but they do not worship them.” The Messenger replied, “Yes, but they forbid to the people what is halal and permit them what is haram, and the people obey them. This is indeed their worship of them.” (Tirmidhi, “Tafsir,” HN: 3292)

  14.  Habakkuk 2:15 "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies.

15.   Habakkuk 2:16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now it is your turn! Drink and be exposed! The cup from the LORD's right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

WHETHER IT IS ALCOHOLIC WINE OR SWINE BOTH ARE FORBIDDEN IN THE BIBLE

Many of today’s Christians alcoholigists drunkards have their main and only argument in favour of drinking alcohol is that Jesus turned water into wine John 2:1-10.

First of all lets bury their argument from the base, the passage doesn’t say that Jesus or his disciples drank that wine (Oinos). They were invited in some wedding and on that occasion the Oinos (wine) was finished and the bride’s mother requested Jesus to arrange something. Whatever the water was turned into which type of wine (fermented (alcoholic) or unfermented (nonalcoholic)) was that can be analysed in detail:

Definitions and Explanation

Vine is the plant on which grapes grow. E.g. There are vine leaves which is normally available in supermarkets and they are Halal without any Alcohol.

Oinos οἶνος is the Greek word for Wine and the word Oinos is generic in nature which indicate basically that its grape juice non alcoholic.  Oinos could also presently be referred to two distinctly different types of juice of the grape:

(1)     unfermented juice, and

(2)     fermented or intoxicating wine.

Christians out of their lust for alcohol blindly thinks that the Oinos (wine) is alcoholic/fermented wine which was never been the case originally because:

(A) The Greek word oinos was used by secular and religious authors in pre-Christian and early church times to refer to fresh grape juice (see Aristotle, "Metereologica", 387.b 9-13)

a. Anacreon (c. 500 B.C.) writes, "Squeeze the grape, let out the wine (oinos)" (Ode 5) b. Nicander (2nd century B.C.) writes of squeezing grapes and refers to the produced juice as oinos (Gerogica, fragment 86).

c. Papias (A.D. 60-130), an early church father, mentions that when grapes are crushed they yield "jars of wine (oinos)" (cited by Irenaeus, "Against Herecies", 5.33.3-4)

d. A Greek Papyrus letter (P. Oxy. 729; A.D. 137) speaks of fresh wine(oinos) from the treading vat" (see Moulton and Miligan, "The Vocabulary of the Greek Testament,p.10)

e. Athenaeus (AD. 200) speaks of a "sweet wine(oinos)" that "does not make the head heavy" i.e. Non Alcoholic (Athanaeus, "Banquet",1.54).

In another place, he writes of a man gathering grapes who "went about, and took wine (oinos) from the field" (1.54). For more detailed discussions on use of oinos by ancient writers, see Robert P. Teachout, "The Use of 'Wine' in the Old Testament" (Th.D. dissertation, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1979) 

(B) The Jewish scholars who translated the O.T. into Greek about 200 BC used oinos when translating several Hebrews words for wine. In other words, the writers of the NT knew that oinos could either be fermented or unfermented juice from the grape. 

(C) As in secular Greek and the OT, an examination of NT passages reveals that oinos may mean either fermented or unfermented wine. In Ephesians 5:18 the command "be not drunk with wine (oinos)," refers to alcoholic wine. On the other hand, in Revelation 19:15 Christ is described as treading out the winepress. The Greek text reads: "He treads the winepress with wine (oinos)"; the oinos that comes forth from the winepress would be grape juice (Isaiah 66:10; Jer. 48:32-37). In Revelation 6:6 oinos refers to grapes on the vine as a crop not to be destroyed. Thus, for believers in NT times, "wine"(oinos) was a general word that could be used for two distinctly different grape beverages, fermented and unfermented wine. 

(D) Finally, ancient Roman writers have explained in detail various processes used in dealing with freshly squeezed grape juice, especially ways to preserve it from fermenting a. Columella (on Agriculture, 12.29), knowing that grape juice would not ferment if kept cool (under 50 degrees) and oxygen free, writes as follows: "That your grape juice may be always as sweet as when it is new, thus proceed. After you apply the press to the grapes, take the newest must (i.e. fresh juice), put it in a new container (amphora), bung it up, and cover it up very carefully with pitch lest any water should enter, then sink it in a cistern or pond of cold water and allow no part on the amphora to remain above the surface. After forty days take it out. It will remain sweet for a year" (see also Columella, "Agriculture and Trees"; Cato, "On Agriculture"). The Roman writer Pliny (1st century AD) writes: "as soon as the must (grape juice) is taken from the vat and put into casks, they plunge the casks in water till midwinter passes and regular cold weather sets in" (Pliny, "Natural History", 14.11.83). Israel would have had no problem in applying the above method (Deut. 8:7;11:11-12; Ps. 65:9-13).

So Did Jesus use fermented or unfermented grape drink when He instituted the Last Supper (Mat. 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:17-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-26)? The following data support the conclusion that what Jesus and His disciples drank was unfermented grape juice. 

(1) Neither Luke nor any other Biblical writer uses the word "wine"(oinos) in regard to the Last Supper. The first three Gospel writers use "fruit of the vine" (Mat. 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:18-KJV). Unfermented wine is the only true natural "fruit of the vine," containing approximately 20% sugar and NO alcohol. Fermentation destroys much of sugar and alters what the vine produced. Fermented wine is not the product of the vine. 

(2) The Last Supper was instituted when Jesus and His disciples were eating the Passover. The Passover law in Ex. 12:14-20 prohibited, during Passover week, the presence and use of seor (Ex. 12:15), a word referring to leaven, yeast, or any agent of fermentation. Seor in the ancient world was often obtained from the thick scum in top of unfermenting wine. Furthermore, all hametz (i.e. anything containing any fermentation) was forbidden (Ex. 12:19; 13:7) God had given these laws because fermentation symbolized corruption and sin (Mat. 16:6,12:1 Cor. 5:7-8). Jesus, the Son of Mary, fulfilled the law in every requirement (Mat.5:17). This, He would have followed God's law for the Passover and not used fermented wine.

(3) In the OT fermented drink was never to be used in the house of God, nor were the priests allowed to draw near to God in worship while drinking intoxicating beverages (see Lev. 10:9).

The normal uses of wine by Jews in Biblical days were not the same as today, It was:

a.        grape juice freshly squeezed

b.       grape juice preserved

c.        juice from dried grapes

d.       grape wine made from grape syrup and water

e.        unfermented

If the wine was fermented was considered barbaric, defiling, and incapable of being blessed by the rabbis. In the light of these facts, it is impossible to defend the modern-day practice of drinking alcoholic beverages on the basis of the Jews' use of wine in Biblical times. They are clearly not the same. Furthermore, Christians of Biblical days exercised a more careful attitude towards various kinds of wines than did the Jews.

At Cana if Jesus did turn water into alcoholic wine would that not make him a sinner? he would go against scripture which he infact didn’t do. 

It also forbidden for priests in the (OT) to use alcoholic wine , and never bring it in the tabernacle (church) Proverbs20:1 Nor strong drink, thou, nor the son of thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of congregation lest ye DIE.

Further, There are clear contradictions and serious problem in the miracle of Jesus  in Cana as can be seen below. We see in John chapter 2 that Jesus did his first miracles:

"Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him."

Ok so chapter John 2 is telling us that in Cana Jesus perfomed his first sign

Let's move on to next verse in verse 23 we read that Jesus perfomed many signs

John 2:23
" While Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover Festival, many people believed in him because they saw the signs that he was doing. "

So above we read that Jesus performed his first signs/miracle in Cana and when he was in Jerusalem he performed many signs and people believe in him. However if we read further then in chapter 4 we read

John 4:54
"Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee."

So First sign , then many signs and then the second sign?
So we can clearly see it is a man’s or satan’s handiwork not God’s word. God can never make such mistakes.

The WHO estimates that alcohol results in 2.5m deaths a year, more than AIDS or tuberculosis. In Russia and its former satellite states one in five male deaths is caused by drink.

3.   Alcohol inhibits the inhibitory centre

The human beings possess an inhibitory centre in their brains. This inhibitory centre prevents the person from doing things that he considers wrong. For instance a person does not normally use abusive language while addressing his parents or elders. If he has to answer the call of nature, his inhibitory centre will prevent him from doing so in public. Therefore he uses the toilet.

When a person consumes alcohol, the inhibitory centre itself is inhibited. That is precisely the reason that an inebriated person is often found to be indulging in behaviour that is completely uncharacteristic of him. For instance the intoxicated person is found to use abusive and foul language and does not realize his mistake even if he is addressing his parents. Many even urinate in their clothes. Neither do they talk nor walk properly. They even misbehave.

Alcohol does not warm the body up; the old image of St. Bernard rescue dogs with brandy barrels around their necks is a myth as strong alcohol is the last thing you'd want to consume if stranded in the snow. When cold, the body closes off numerous arteriole sphincters that shut off blood supply from the extremities; fingers, arms legs and so on, conserving body heat to the head and torso where it's needed. While this generates the feeling of being cold, it is actually saving your life. Alcohol prevents this mechanism from working, opening up the arteriole sphincters and allowing blood to flow to all parts of the body. This may generate a feeling of being warm, but is actually indicative of losing substantial amounts of body heat. 4.   Cases of adultery, rape, incest and AIDS are found more among alcoholics

According to National Crime Victimization Survey Bureau of Justice (U.S. Department of Justice) in the year 1996 alone everyday on an average 2,713 rapes took place. The statistics tell us that the majority of the rapists, were intoxicated while committing the crime. The same is true in cases of molestation.

According to statistics, 8% of Americans commit incest i.e. one in every twelve to thirteen persons in America is involved in incest. Almost all the cases of incest are due to intoxication of one or both the persons involved.

One of the major factors associated with the spread of AIDS, the most dreaded disease, is alcoholism.

5.   Every alcoholic was initially a social drinker

Many may argue in favour of liquor by calling themselves ‘social drinkers’. They claim that they only have one or two pegs and they have self-control and so never get intoxicated. Investigations reveal that every alcoholic started as a social drinker. Not a single alcoholic or drunkard initially starts drinking with the intention of becoming an alcoholic or a drunkard. No social drinker can say that I have been having alcohol for several years and that I have so much self-control that I have never been intoxicated even a single time.

6.   If a person is intoxicated just once and commits something shameful, it will remain with him for a lifetime.

Suppose a ‘social drinker’ loses his self-control just once. In a state of intoxication he commits rape or incest. Even if the act is later regretted, a normal human being is likely to carry the guilt throughout his life. Both the perpetrator and the victim are irreparably and irreversibly damaged.

7.   Alcohol is prohibited in the Hadith

The Prophet of Islam Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

     1.     In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3371.

"Alcohol is the mother of all evils and it is the most shameful of evils."

     2.     In Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3392
"Anything which intoxicates in a large quantity, is prohibited even in a small quantity."

Thus there is no excuse for a nip or a tot.

      3.     Not only those who drink alcohol are cursed but also those who deal with them directly or indirectly are cursed by Allah. According to Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume 3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith No. 3380.

It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:

"God’s curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol. The one who distills it, the one for whom it has been distilled, the one who drinks it, the one who transports it, the one to who it has been brought, the one whom serves it, the one who sells it, the one who utilizes money from it, the one who buys it and the one who buys it for someone else."
4. Ibn Umar  reported that the Messenger of Allah  said, "Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is haraam (unlawful). Whosoever drinks wine in this world and dies whilst consumed in it and does not repent will not drink it in the next world. (Muslim)
5. Jabir  narrates that a man came from Yemen and asked the Prophet  about a wine made from corn called ‘Mizr’, which they drank, in their land. The Prophet  asked, "Is it intoxicating?" He replied, "Yes" The Prophet  said, "Every intoxicant is unlawful. Verily there is covenant upon Allah for one who drinks intoxicating drinks, that he will make him drink from ‘Teenatul Khabal,’ they asked, "O messenger of Allah, what is Teenatul Khabal?" He said, "The sweat of the inmates of hell or the pus (of impurities) of the inmates of hell." (Muslim)

6. Abdullah ibn Umar  reports that the Prophet  said, "Whosoever drinks wine, Allah will not accept his prayer for 40 days. If he seeks repentance Allah will forgive him. And if he repeats it Allah will not accept his prayer for 40 days. If he seeks repentance Allah will forgive him. And if he repeats it again Allah will not accept his prayer for 40 days. If he seeks repentance Allah will forgive him. If he repeats it for the fourth time Allah will not accept his prayer for 40 days. If he seeks repentance Allah will not accept it and he will be made to drink from the river of impurities (of the inmates of hell). (Tirmidhi, Nasai, Ibn Majah and Daarami from Ibn Amr)

7. Jabir  narrated that the Messenger of Allah  said; "Whatever intoxicates in a greater quantity is also unlawful in its smaller quantity." (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah)  
 8. Umme Salmah  narrates that the Messenger of Allah  prohibited every intoxicant and Mufattir (anything which excites and irritates the mind, body and heart). (Abu Dawood) 

9. Abdullah Ibn Amr t reports from the Prophet, who said, "One who is disobedient to parents, gambles, harsh after charity and a is a habitual drunkard shall not enter paradise." (Daarami) 

10. Abu Umaamah  reported that the Messenger of Allah  said, "Verily Almighty Allah sent me as a mercy for all the worlds; and my Almighty and Glorious Lord ordered me to abolish drums, musical instruments, idols, the cross and the affairs of the days of Ignorance. My Almighty and Glorious Lord has sworn, "By my honour, no servant among my servants shall drink a mouthful of wine but I will make him drink like it from the scorching water (of hell); and none abstains from it out of fear of me but I will give him drink from the Holy fountain." (Ahmad) 

11. Ibn Umar  narrates that the Messenger of Allah  said, "There are three for whom Allah has forbidden paradise, a habitual drunkard, one disobedient to parents, and a careless husband who establishes impurity in his family." (Ahmad and Nasai) 

12. Abu Musa Al-Asharee  narrates that the Messenger of Allah  said, "There are three who will not enter paradise, a habitual drunkard, one who cuts of blood ties and one who believes in sorcery. (Ahmad) 
13. Ibn Abbas  reported that the Messenger of Allah  said’ "If a habitual drunkard dies, he will meet Allah like the one who worships idols." (Ahmad, Ibn majah from Abu Hurrairah) 
14. Abu Musa  reported that he used to say, "I do not differentiate whether I drink wine or worship these idols besides Allah.    (Nasai ) 

15. Dailamah Al-Humairee states: I asked the Holy Prophet , ‘O Messenger of Allah (  ), Verily we are in a cold land, and we have to work hard therein, and we prepare wine from this wheat which gives as strength in our works and in the chill of our cities.’ He asked, ‘Does it intoxicate?’ ‘yes’ he replied. He said, ‘Give it up.’ I said, ‘Verily the people can not give it up.’ He said, ‘If they do not give it up, fight with them.’ (Abu Dawood) 

8.   Diseases associated with alcoholism

There are several scientific reasons for the prohibition of consumption of intoxicants i.e. alcohol. The maximum number of deaths in the world related to any one particular cause is due to the consumption of alcohol. Millions of people die every year only because of intake of alcohol. I need not go into the details of all the ill-effects of alcohol since most of them are commonly known. Below is a simple list of few of the alcohol related illnesses:

     1.     Cirrhosis of Liver is the most well known alcohol associated disease.

     2.     Others are Cancer of Oesophagus, Cancer of Head and Neck, Cancer of Liver (Hepatoma), Cancer of Bowel, etc.

     3.     Oesophagitis, Gastritis, Pancreatitis and Hepatitis are linked with alcohol consumption.

     4.     Cardiomyopathy, Hypertension, Coronary Artherosclerosis, Angina and Heart Attacks are linked with heavy alcohol intakes.

     5.     Strokes, Apoplexy, Fits and different types of Paralysis are linked with alcohol intake.

     6.     Peripheral Neuropathy, Cortical Atrophy, Cerebellar Atrophy are well-known syndromes caused by alcohol consumption.

     7.     Wernicke – Korsakoff syndrome with amnesia of recent events, confabulations and retainment of memory to old events with different types of paralysis are mainly due to thiamine deficiency due to excessive alcohol intake.

     8.     Beriberi and other deficiencies are not uncommon among alcoholics. Even Pellagra occurs in alcoholics.

     9.     Delerium Tremens is a serious complication that may occur during recurrent infection of alcoholics or post operatively. It also occurs during abstention as a sign of withdrawal effect. It is quite serious and may cause death even if treated in well equipped centres.

    10.  Numerous Endocrine Disorders have been associated with alcoholism ranging from Myxodema to Hyperthyroidism and Florid Cushing Syndrome.

    11.  Hematological ill effects are long and variable. Folic acid deficiency, however, is the most common manifestation of alcoholic abuse resulting in Macrocytic Anemia. Zeive’s syndrome is a triad of Hemolytic Anemia, Jaundice and Hyperlipaedemia that follows alcoholic binges.

    12.  Thrombocytopenia and other platelet abnormalities are not rare in alcoholics.

    13.  The commonly used tablet metronidazole (flagyl) interacts badly with alcohol.

    14.  Recurrent infection is very common among chronic alcoholics. The resistance to disease and the immunological defense system are compromised by alcohol intake.

    15.  Chest infections are notorious in alcoholics. Pneumonia, Lung Abcess, Emphysema and Pulmonary Tuberculosis are all common in alcoholics.

    16.  During acute alcoholic intoxication, the drunk person usually vomits, the cough reflexes which are protective are paralysed. The vomitus thus easily pass to the lung causing Pneumonia or Lung Abscess. Occasionally it may even cause suffocation and death.

    17.  The ill effects of alcohol consumption on women deserves special mention. Females are more vulnerable to alcohol-related Cirrhosis than men. During pregnancy alcohol consumption has a severe detrimental effect on the foetus. Foetal Alcohol Syndrome is being recognised more and more in the medical profession.

    18.  Skin diseases are also related to alcohol indulgence. Alcohol is bad for your skin as well as your body. Alcohol is a diuretic; it causes the body to lose water. That can contribute to dry skin. It also dilates blood vessels. That's why drinkers often have red, flushed faces. Over time, these blood vessels can become permanently damaged, so that skin stays red. Alcohol, especially red wine, can also trigger rosacea flare-ups.

    19.  Eczema, Alopecia, Nail Dystrophy, Paronychia (infection around the nails) and Angular Stomatitis (inflammation of the angle of the mouth) are common diseases among alcoholics.
     20. Sheikh Taymiyyah describes its faults: - 

a) From a religious point of view it is as intoxicating as wine, it destroys the mind, causes forgetfulness, causes to reveal secrets, destroys shame, incubates dissimation, quells self respects, obliterates intelligence, prevents salaah and instigates towards Haraam, forbidden things.

b) From a physical aspect it deteriorates the mind, cuts off the means for offspring, brings about leprosy, sickness, feverish shivers, bad breath, loss of eyebrows and teeth, warming of blood, tuberculosis, damages intestines, destroys body organs, punctures the liver, burns the stomach and weakens eyesight amongst other things.

9.   Alcoholism is a ‘disease’

Medical doctors have now turned liberal towards alcoholics and call alcoholism a disease rather than an addiction.

The Islamic Research Foundation has published a pamphlet that says:

If alcohol is a disease, it is the only disease that:

- Is sold in bottles

- Is advertised in newspapers, magazines, on radio and television

- Has licensed outlets to spread it

- Produces revenue for the government

- Brings violent deaths on the highways

- Destroys family life and increases crime

- Has no germs or viral cause

ALCOHOLISM IS NOT A DISEASE – IT IS SATAN’S HANDIWORK

Allah (swt) in His Infinite Wisdom has warned us against this snare of Satan. Islam is called the "Deen-ul-Fitrah" or the natural religion of Man. All its injunctions are aimed at preserving the natural state of man. Alcohol is a deviation from this natural state, for the individual as well as for society. It degrades man to a level below that of the beasts he claims to be superior to. Hence the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Islam.
